Common Loon Field Biologist

Hank first joined BRI in 2024 as a summer research intern surveying common loons in Southern Maine for BRI’s common loon translocation project. He incorporated the data collected during his internship to complete his Biology Honors Thesis at Bowdoin College examining the modulation of migratory and breeding phenology by Maine’s common loons in relation to spring climate conditions. Hank was hired in the summer of 2025 as a Common Loon Field Biologist to conduct loon surveys, deploy artificial loon nesting rafts, and perform nighttime loon captures in the Rangeley Lakes and Moosehead Lake regions.
Outside of the summer field season, Hank conducts fieldwork for various other BRI projects, including its soil carbon and biodiversity project in the Western Province of Zambia. He also assists with data management and analysis for many different BRI projects.
Prior to joining BRI, Hank worked as an animal care manager at a wildlife rehabilitation center and conducted biomechanics research in a lab developing mathematical models and procedures to characterize sea star locomotion.
