Applied Ecology Group

BRI’s Applied Ecology Group brings the rigor of a research institute to the practical challenges of natural resource management. We help agencies, organizations, and industry partners assess project impacts on wildlife and the environment. We work to avoid, minimize and mitigate impacts, grounding every recommendation in sound science and field-tested methods.

Our team combines expertise in field data collection, quantitative analysis, regulatory and permitting requirements, decision support, and science communication. We translate complex ecological data into clear, robust products that decision-makers and regulators can rely on.

Natural Resource Surveys

New Englanders take great pride in their natural resources. When selecting a site location, there are a myriad of resources that must be recognized and understood. Our team has a mind for resources – evaluating project viewshed and site access, identifying critical lay-of-the-land factors, conducting wetland delineations and ESA Biological Assessments, documenting important natural resources, and understanding relationships with scenic and historic areas. Our attention to detail ensures top-notch natural resource survey services.

Wildlife Surveys

Our biologists have a close understanding of how different forms of wildlife interact with their environment, from specific habitat needs and behavior to current status and threats. Our wildlife background enables us to design and conduct effective wildlife surveys, even in complicated circumstances and complex environments, to evaluate species presence and use patterns, and to assess any risks that proposed projects may pose to wildlife. Our products and expertise have long been trusted in the industry to inform discussions and consultation on ways to avoid, minimize, or mitigate the potential impacts of proposed projects on wildlife.

State and Federal Agency Consultation

One of the most critical components of any permitting process is effective consultation with State and Federal Agencies, municipalities, citizens, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), and other stakeholders. We understand the importance of these communications. We work alongside various agencies and stakeholders to understand and address their needs and concerns. We have a track record for creative, effective solutions that serve both developers and stakeholders.

Compliance Monitoring

Compliance monitoring is an inherent component of operation for any renewable energy facility. Our team has expertise in monitoring both during and after construction to ensure that environmental regulations and permitting conditions are being met. We have performed everything from decades-long avian and fisheries compliance work on Maine’s hydroelectric reservoirs, to cutting-edge studies assessing wildlife use at offshore wind facilities. Whatever compliance monitoring needs are assigned to any project—we have the background and resources to meet the task.

Comprehensive Project Management

Our integrated team of renewable energy experts, accomplished wildlife research biologists, and experienced consultants, provide powerful and capable comprehensive project management for any project we undertake.
